How to join, renew, or upgrade

Register: you will get a username consisting of 2 lower-case letters followed by 3 digits. (You may want to first read the by-laws & other rules).
Show proof of identity: mail, fax, or bring to the office the username which you received in step 1, along with something that proves who you are (because you are becoming a voting member). Any of the following will do:
- Cheque that is pre-printed with your name and address.
- Credit card in your own name (must not be expired).
- Utility bill listing your name and address.
- Any kind of government ID. (Please do not fax photo identification, as it is not legible.)
- Any piece of paper issued by a large institution (hospital, library, school, employment centre, etc) that shows your name & address.

Once you are a member, you can, at any time, upgrade your account level from Basic, by paying the corresponding fees and by filling out the corresponding form(s):
- Plus Membership form.
- DSL sign-up form (please disregard the pre-authorized debit section; use the separate pre-authorized debit form for that).
- Pre-authorized debit form (see also: instructions).
Thereafter, you must periodically renew your account.

For Basic access, you must renew every 6 months. For other levels, your payments act as your renewal. If payments are not received in time, an account is reset to Basic. When a Basic account has not been renewed, it is archived.

TFN sends an email notification of impending expiry to your @torfree.net address and to any alternate address which you provide (you can provide one in the membership registration form or by notifying the office later), but delivery of these notices can fail, eg because of a full mailbox. It is ultimately your own responsibility to remember to renew before expiry.

You can arrange to have your @torfree.net email messages forwarded: telnet or ssh to shell.torfree.net and press "f" when you reach the numbered choice menu.
To regain access to your archived account, contact the office.

Toronto Free-Net is run solely by volunteers. All services are offered either at cost or free of charge. If you are able, please volunteer, donate money, and hand down your old equipment. At every account level, donations of any amount are welcome!
